Why Industrial Facilities Must Engineer Source Capture and Duct Systems

Source capture and duct system design are not optional components of an industrial air pollution control system, they are the foundation on which every abatement technology depends.

Worker Health Protection, Fugitive Emissions Capture and Air Permit Compliance

Fume exhaust contains a significant percentage of submicron sized particulate matter. These particles can enter the lungs of workers, making effective capture and exhaust processes critical for worker health, facility compliance and the surrounding community. Without a capture device positioned at the emission point, contaminants mix with large volumes of room air, diluting to concentrations that are harder to treat and exposing workers in the surrounding area to continuous low-level contamination.

Reduced Abatement Equipment Size and Operating Cost Through Optimized Capture Volume

Regulatory requirements for worker exposure limits and ambient air quality standards drive the engineering of source capture systems. Most permissible exposure limits and air permit conditions for fugitive emissions require that contaminants be intercepted at the source where feasible. Facilities that rely on dilution ventilation alone rather than source capture typically require significantly larger air volumes, larger abatement equipment and higher energy consumption to achieve the same level of worker and environmental protection.

Efficient Delivery of Contaminants to Downstream Abatement Equipment

Duct system design directly determines whether captured contaminants arrive at the abatement equipment in the right condition. Incorrect duct velocity causes particulate dropout in the ductwork before it reaches the dust collector. Duct leakage reduces capture efficiency and allows fugitive emissions to bypass the abatement system. Poor balance between duct branches results in uneven airflow and underperformance across the system. A correctly engineered duct system is as critical to system performance as the abatement equipment it serves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Source capture is the interception of dust, fume, mist or vapor at or as close as possible to the point where it is generated, before it disperses into the plant air. Source capture is required because abatement equipment, dust collectors, scrubbers, thermal oxidizers and mist eliminators can only treat contaminants that are delivered to them through the duct system. Without effective source capture at the emission point, contaminants mix with large volumes of diluted room air, increasing the airflow volume and equipment size required for treatment and leaving workers in the surrounding area exposed to contaminated air.

The correct order from emission point to atmosphere is source capture device, duct system, primary collection or pre-treatment where required, abatement equipment and exhaust stack.

1. Source capture intercepts the contaminant at the process.
2. The duct system conveys it to the abatement equipment.
3. Pre-treatment removes coarse material that would foul the primary abatement device.
4. The abatement equipment, dust collector, scrubber, thermal oxidizer or mist eliminator treats the contaminant.
5. The cleaned air exits through the stack.

Every stage depends on the stage before it performing correctly.

Yes. Retrofit applications are available across the full range of source capture and duct system technologies.  Rolling mill hood and enclosure systems are specifically noted for performance in difficult retrofit applications, and modular clamp-together duct systems are designed for flexible layouts and quick reconfiguration that accommodate existing facility constraints. Turnkey engineering, project management and installation services support retrofit projects from initial design through commissioning.

Duct velocity determines whether particulate is transported to the abatement equipment or settles out in the ductwork before it arrives. Each material has a minimum transport velocity below which it will drop out and accumulate in the duct, causing blockages and reducing system airflow. Duct leakage allows captured contaminants to escape to the plant air before reaching the abatement equipment. Branch balance determines how airflow is distributed between multiple source capture points. An unbalanced system will over-capture at some points and under-capture at others. All three factors are determined by duct design and have a direct effect on abatement equipment performance and compliance.

Clamp-together duct systems use tool-free modular clamps that allow fast installation, flexible layout and quick reconfiguration without specialized tools, suited to dust collection, fume and oil mist applications in wood, paper, chemical and general manufacturing.

Flanged duct systems use bolted flanged connections and heavy-gauge construction for abrasive, high-load or high-velocity applications where durability and rigidity are required over flexibility.

Welded duct systems provide the highest structural integrity for permanent installations in demanding process environments. Selection depends on the abrasiveness of the transported material, the required system permanence and the installation conditions.
